Basic Violet 5 / Dimethyl Safranine is the dye of violet color which is also known by name of basic violet 6bn. It finds application as electroplating chemical and has brown/greenish brown powder based appearance with dye content (Spectrophotometric)of > 70%. Its other properties include maximum absorption in water of 544-550 nm, absorptivity (A1%/1cm in water at ? max.) of > 700 and loss on drying (110° C) of < 5 %.

These are also used for staining mitochondria where there is change in color of indicator janus green B depending upon the amount of oxygen present. The indicator is oxidized in blue color in presence of oxygen and shows pink color in case of absence of oxygen.
